These are the sound files of my REFLEX models. While I personally
recorded some of them, some are recorded by others. These authors
are credited in the following descriptions. You may use the sounds
since the authors gave them to the public one or another way. Store
the sound files in the standard Flugzeug directory or in the same
directory as the model files they belong to, both ways will work.
If you could contribute a missing model sound for REFLEX, please
read the short recording instructions below.


AXI2212-11x7.wav/AXI2212-11x7_.wav

The sound of a brushless external rotor ('outrunner') AXI drive
seems to be so typical that it could even be recorded without any
model 'attached' to the drive. Nevertheless, I used my AXI 2212/34
with an APC 11x7 SlowFly propeller and a 3s LiPoly battery in my
threedee400. I use the sound not only for the REFLEX model of the
threedee400 (where I use the drive), but also for Super Miss and
Jitterbug.

The same AXI 2212/34 motor with an APC 9x7.5 SlowFly propeller
sounds quite different. Turning faster, the propeller produces
a higher tone, almost similar to a circular saw. Turning with less
torque, the motor sounds softer, without the pronounced whine at
higher torque. So the sound of a drive is not simply a combination
of the sounds of the single component's, but depends on the whole
configuration of motor, propeller, and maybe gearbox.

Brummi.wav/Brummi_.wav

The sound of the Multiplex Brummi is supposed to be specific to
this model. There are other models very similar to the Brummi
(especially Miss 2 and Super Miss) by the same Czech manufacturer,
but only Brummi has the Multiplex 400L drive. The mix of gearbox
whine, propeller vibrations, and resonance of the model's body
should be unique.

The AXI 2212/34 motor with an APC 9x6 SlowFly propeller whines
like any brushless outrunner drive (without gear), but there's
still the sound of the propeller and the resonance of the Model's
body.

A few years ago, somebody (Michael Pfenning or Manfred Tretter?)
uploaded some raw jet sound files to RC-Sim for free download
(http://www.rc-sim.com/). They were rather big, the loudness
fluctuating severely. I only cut out short pieces where loudness
is fluctuating not too much and adjusted loudness to a convenient
level. I found this sound to be so good that it might be the
missing standard jet sound for REFLEX. So it's file name is
spelled in small letters and it should be stored in the Flugzeug
directory.

SlowStick.wav/SlowStick_.wav
----------------------------
John Arrington earned credits for recording the sound of the
GWS Slow Stick. He used a standard EPS300 drive, but a slightly
different prop and battery. That should make hardly a difference
in sound since the whine of the gearbox will prevail anyhow. So
the sound should fit any Slow Stick or even any other model with
a GWS drive.

Thermik-Star.wav/Thermik-Star_.wav

The sound of my Thermik-Star thermal glider is recorded running it's
electric drive at full and idle power. It's a Plettenberg HP 200/25/5
motor with 4.4:1 gear, an aero-naut CAMcarbon 14x8" folding propeller,
a Schulze smart-45bo ESC and a 7-cell Sanyo RC-2400 battery. The glass
fibre fuselage of the model and even the wings may substantially
contribute to the sound. Anyway, the propeller hum prevails at full
power and the gearbox whine at idle.

As the file name indicates, this is the sound of a Simprop AcroDrive
350+BB (Acro Speed 280BB 6V motor, MPJet 5:1 BB gear, APC 9x6"
SlowFly propeller, 8-cell NiCd battery). It's sound was recorded
when it powered my threedee400 aerobatic parkflyer, which is quite
heavy for that drive. Most pronounced is the gearbox whine, but you
may hear the ball bearings and the propeller, too. Maybe you only
think you hear it, but anyhow, the sound seems to be typical for
the drive. The sound might be amplified or damped by the model's
body, but it should approximately fit any model powered by the
AcroDrive 350+BB.

threedee480.wav/threedee480_.wav

This sound was recorded when my threedee400 was powered by a more
standard drive. It was a simple 480 type 7.2 V motor with the stan-
dard (non BB) MPJet 3:1 gearbox, an APC 11x7 SlowFly propeller and
an 8-cell NiCd battery. As with the previous sound, this one should
also be usable for any model powered by this drive, even foamies.
After all, the gearbox whine prevails against all other parts of the
sound. But it differs typically from the gearbox sound of the pre-
vious drive, even though both gearboxes are very similar.

YS63S.wav/YS63S_.wav

There was a website presenting a video with a demonstration of the
Yamada YS 63S. Unfortunately, I can't find the web page any more.
Nevertheless, the video was used to extract the sound of this
powerful 4-stroke engine. Especially the full-power sound isn't
perfect, but it isn't bad either.

Saito 90 TS.wav/Saito 90 TS_.wav

The Saito 90 TS is a flat-twin 4-stroke engine. Jim Booker wrote
an article about the sound of Saito engines which is published
on the Horizon Hobby website, along with three sound files.

RCV Engines 91-CD is a unique 4-stroke engine featuring a rotary

compared to the other gas engines with magnetos. This 20 ccm

The former is similar to the sound of a formula-1 racing car, the
latter renders the noise of the rotor gearing and maybe the
apex seals.

For those who would like to get the real sound of any model for the
Reflex XTR simulator:


The sound of a model can not be tuned up in REFLEX (all versions),
instead one has to record the sound and make a sound file (two,
strictly speaking). It's quite easy to do, at least for smaller
electric powered models, since it can be done at home directly with
the PC as the recording device.

All you need is a PC with a sound adapter and a simple microphone.
Microsoft Windows contains a sound recorder program. Any other
sound recorder or sound editor program would be fine, as would be
Linux or a better microphone, maybe in a headset, a camera or in a
monitor.

I put a bar or broomstick on the floor beneath my PC and put the
model on the floor, the wheels against the bar to block them. It
may be necessary to tie down the model to the floor (with tape) to
prevent it from going nose-over and damaging the prop (not to
mention your room). So at the same time I can hands-off run the
model at full power and hold the microphone towards it with my left
hand.

Only a simple (and cheap) microphone is needed. It is plugged into
the correct socket (marked red) of the sound adapter (or wherever
it is suitable). In the Windows 'accessories' menu, there is a
submenu 'entertainment' (or so, I have the German version)
containing a 'sound recorder' program. After starting that program,
a new 'wav' file has to be created and properties set to
22050 Hz / 8 bit / mono. The program is handled with the
right hand (mouse).

The transmitter is switched on, then the model. With the sound
recorder, record two files, each 5 to 10 seconds long. One is for
the idle sound, when the propeller is just turning, the other for
full power sound. In both cases, the drive should run steady and
not oscillate. Don't move the microphone during the recording!

You might wonder how much the sound will fluctuate anyway. That's
why I process the sound files in a sound editor. REFLEX will repeat
the short recording over and over again, so both beginning and end
should have the same level. I cut out a short piece of about one or
two seconds equal at both sides. Another advantage is the smaller
file size. On this occasion, I adjust the amplitude of the sound to
a convenient level.

The full-power sound file may be named arbitrarily (except the
extension .wav), for instance SlowStick.wav. The idle-power sound
file must have the same name with an underscore appended, for
instance SlowStick_.wav. Both files have to be stored in the
directory \Program Files\REFLEX\Flugzeug\ or the subdirectory where
the model files (e.g. SlowStick.mod and SlowStick.par) are located.
The sound has to be selected and stored in the model parameters in
REFLEX (hit F5 to get the dialog box).

REFLEX will mix the idle and full-power sounds and tune the sound
pitch corresponding to power setting and flight speed. There are no
parameters to influence this process, but REFLEX does a good job.
Even the Doppler effect is simulated giving different tones when
the model is coming to the pilot or going away.


If you happen to own one of the modern digital cameras you might
use it to record model sounds. There are some advantages:

* You can record outdoors avoiding risks for furniture, but you
  should still fix the model on the ground.
* You may record the sound of glow and gas engines as well as that
  of electric motors, but you should even more see to get a constant
  sound.
* The sound is more lifelike because there are no echoes and
  distortions by walls and furniture, but you should still hold the
  microphone in a fixed position during the recording.
* The recorded sound is already a wav file simply transferred to the
  PC, but you will likely have to convert it to 22050 Hz / 8 bit /
  mono format which is recommended for REFLEX. 

With my Casio EX-S500, all I have to do is select a 'Best Shot' mode
named 'Sound Recording' and press the shutter release. The camera
should point to the sound source, the rest is done automatically.
One disadvantage: It's difficult to silence people or even birds in
the vicinity. So hold the camera / microphone close to the model.


Because no recorded sound will be perfect, despite all efforts for
good recording conditions, it has to be edited. Use a sound editor
like CoolEdit to do that since the MS Windows Audio Recorder is too
simple. You might want to adjust the amplitude, but that's for
convenience only in case of the full-power sound. You may have
to do it to the idle-power sound because amplitude is automatically
set to a quite high value by the recording system.

Most important is to cut out a piece of equal level on both sides.
If you recorded a few seconds you can select a suitable piece of
at least one second length. Be sure to select a piece of typical and
steady sound. In the editor, start playing the selection repeatedly
(play looped). Now you will hear if the transition from end to
beginning is smooth or clumsy. In the latter case, move left and/or
right edge of the selection until they match in wave form and level.
You shouldn't hear a transition any more in the sound editor and in
REFLEX as well. Experiment!

REFLEX will accept long (several seconds) high-quality (sampling
rate) recordings, but will well do without. The simpler 22050 Hz /
8 bit / mono (standard) format in conjunction with (select) short
pieces of about one second gives fairly small sound files but still
very good sound quality in REFLEX.
